Where will you use the geyser?

Tap one. It takes less than a minute to finish.

Step 2 of 6

How do people usually bathe?

A shower uses more hot water than a bucket, because the water keeps running.

Step 3 of 6

How many people use this bathroom every day?

More than one bathroom? Run this check for each one.

Step 4 of 6

On busy mornings, do people bathe back to back?

A storage geyser needs time to heat up again once the tank runs low.

Recommended Geysers

Here are the three types of geyser, matched to your result. Tap a button to compare prices for your size on Amazon or Flipkart.

Best Match1L to 3LKitchen

Instant Geysers

Small and quick, for the kitchen or one person's short bucket bath. Most use 3 kW or more, so plan for a 16A earthed socket.

Searching for: 3 litre instant water geyser

Best Match6L to 35LFamily bathrooms

Storage Vertical Geyser

The most common choice for family bathrooms. It heats a full tank and keeps it hot, so several people can bathe one after another.

Searching for: 15 litre storage water geyser vertical

Best Match15L to 35LLow ceilings

Storage Horizontal Geyser

Sits sideways on the wall, so it suits low ceilings and short walls, like above a door or in a loft corner. Same hot water, less height.

We don't sell these products. Before you buy, check the capacity, wattage and warranty on the listing, and that the geyser comes with its safety valve.

Choosing the Right Geyser Size Starts With Your Mornings

It's 7 am in December. You're halfway through your bath, and the water turns cold. Meanwhile, someone is already knocking on the door, waiting for their turn.

Sound familiar? That's usually not a faulty geyser. It's the wrong geyser size. And here's the thing: bigger isn't always better either. The right size depends on how many people bathe, how they bathe, and when.

If you haven't tried the Size Finder above yet, it takes less than a minute. This guide explains the thinking behind it, using figures from real geyser manuals.

Instant or Storage Geyser: What's the Real Difference?

Before you pick a size, pick a type. The two work in very different ways, and choosing the wrong one is the most common mistake we see.

Feature Instant Geyser Storage Geyser
Common capacity1L to 3L (some up to 6L)6L to 35L
Typical power3 kW to 4.5 kW2 kW (some small models 3 kW)
How it worksHeats water quickly as it flows. Less flow gives hotter water.Heats a full tank and keeps it hot with insulation
Wait timeVery short8 to 55 minutes from cold, depending on size
Best forKitchen, hand wash, quick single useBathrooms, families, showers
Hot water quantityLimitedEnough for several baths

An instant geyser makes sense if

  • You need warm water in the kitchen
  • Only one person uses the bathroom for a quick bucket bath
  • Wall space is very limited

A storage geyser makes sense if

  • Two or more people use the bathroom
  • You use a shower
  • People bathe one after another in the morning

Geyser Size Chart: How Many Litres Does Your Family Need?

This is the question most people come here with. Use this chart as a starting point. Find the row for your family, then the column for how you bathe.

If everyone bathes back to back, or winters get very cold, go one size up. These are recommended sizes based on what our technicians see in homes, not fixed rules.

Geyser Size by Where You'll Use It

Sometimes the room tells you more than the family size does.

  • Kitchen: 1L to 3L instant. Short bursts of warm water for washing dishes.
  • Guest bathroom: 6L to 10L storage. It's used now and then, so a small tank is enough.
  • Main family bathroom: 15L to 25L storage. It handles daily use by the whole family.
  • Bathroom with a shower: 25L or more. Showers use water the whole time they run.
  • Bathtub: more than most home geysers hold. Speak to a technician for the right setup.

5 Things That Change the Size You Need

Two families of four can need different geysers. Let's be honest, a family that showers at 7 am sharp has very different needs from one that bathes through the day.

Bathing back to back

A storage geyser needs time to heat up again once the tank runs low. If everyone gets ready at the same time, a bigger tank saves the waiting.

How cold your winters get

Colder tap water means you mix in more hot water for a comfortable bath. So the tank empties faster in December than in October.

Bucket or shower

A bucket holds a fixed amount. A shower keeps running, often for longer than people realise.

Number of bathrooms

One geyser per bathroom usually works better than one large geyser feeding several taps far apart.

Water pressure in your building

High-rise buildings and pump supplies may need extra valves. This doesn't change the size, but it does change which model and setup suit you.

How Long Does Each Geyser Size Take to Heat Water?

You've probably wondered how early to switch it on. Here's what one manufacturer lists for raising the water temperature by 35°C, which is roughly cold tap water to a warm bath.

Capacity Power Time to Raise Water by 35°C
6L3 kWAbout 8 minutes
10L3 kWAbout 12 minutes
15L2 kWAbout 20 minutes
25L2 kWAbout 30 minutes
35L2 kWAbout 55 minutes

Source: Bajaj storage water heater specification table. Heating times vary by brand. For example, A. O. Smith lists 12 minutes for its 15L, 2 kW model, and its 3 kW Express Heat version is faster still.

Havells suggests switching on a storage geyser at least an hour before first use. Need hot water early in the morning? You can switch it on the night before. The thermostat cuts the power once the water is hot.

Will Your Wall Handle the Weight?

Most buyers never think about this one. A geyser full of water is far heavier than the box it came in, and it hangs on your wall for years.

Capacity Weight When Full Wall Should Hold at Least
6LAbout 13 kg27 kg
10LAbout 16 kg32 kg
15LAbout 26 to 29 kg58 kg
25LAbout 36 to 41 kg82 kg
35LAbout 50 kg100 kg

A. O. Smith asks for a wall that holds at least twice the weight of the full geyser. Havells adds that hollow brick walls may need a concrete fill about 10 cm deep where the bracket goes.

Does a Bigger Geyser Use More Electricity?

A little, yes. Most storage geysers heat at 2 kW whatever their size, so the heating power is similar. The difference is how much water you heat, and how much heat slowly escapes while it sits in the tank.

That slow loss is called standing loss. Manuals list it, measured with the water 45°C warmer than the room.

Model Capacity Units Lost per Day
A. O. Smith SAS / SDS15L0.41
A. O. Smith SAS / SDS25L0.51
Havells Monza Slim i15L0.46
Havells Monza Slim i25L0.56

The gap is small, but it adds up over a year. An oversized geyser also heats water you never use. So pick the size you need, not the biggest one in the shop. Want to see the numbers for your home? Try our Geyser Electricity Cost Calculator.

What Power Supply Does Each Geyser Need?

A geyser draws a lot of current. An old or low-rated socket is one of the most common reasons an MCB keeps tripping.

Geyser Power Current Drawn What You Need
2 kW (most storage)About 8.7A16A earthed socket and a suitable MCB
3 kW (instant and small storage)About 13A16A earthed socket and a suitable MCB
4.5 kW (some instant models)About 19.6AAn electrician should check the wiring and socket rating

Do

  • Use a separate socket with proper earthing
  • Keep the socket within about 3 feet of the geyser

Don't

  • Use extension cords or adapters
  • Connect the earth wire to neutral or to a water pipe

How Much Space Do You Need Around a Geyser?

A geyser that's squeezed into a corner is hard to service later. Manuals ask for some breathing room.

Area Recommended Gap
From the ceilingAt least 5 cm (Havells, Symphony) to 50 cm (Bajaj)
From side wallsAbout 50 cm
From the floorAt least 1.8 m
Behind the geyserAbout 6 inches (A. O. Smith)

Tight on space or have a low ceiling? A horizontal or slim model may fit better. Always leave room for servicing later.

Common Geyser Sizing Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Buying the biggest size "just in case", then paying to heat water nobody uses.
  2. Choosing an instant geyser for a busy family bathroom.
  3. Forgetting the morning rush, when everyone bathes back to back.
  4. Not checking whether the wall can carry the full weight.
  5. Plugging a 3 kW geyser into an old, low-rated socket.
  6. Leaving no space around the geyser for future servicing.

Quick Checklist Before You Buy

Run through this before you place the order. If you can tick every line, you're ready.

  • I know how many people will use this bathroom.
  • I know if we use a bucket, a shower or both.
  • I've chosen between instant and storage.
  • My wall can hold twice the full weight.
  • I have a 16A earthed socket nearby.
  • The spot is indoors, away from sunlight and water splashes.
  • There's enough space around it for servicing.

Frequently Asked Questions

For bucket baths spread through the day, it can just about work, but most families of 4 are happier with 15L. If anyone uses a shower, or everyone bathes in the morning rush, go for 25L so nobody is left waiting.
Yes, for one person taking a quick bucket bath. An instant geyser heats water as it flows, so you get warm water fast, but only a limited amount at a time. For two or more people, a storage geyser is a better fit.
A 15L geyser suits 2 people with showers, or 3 to 4 people with bucket baths. A 25L geyser suits 3 to 4 people who shower or bathe back to back. The 25L takes longer to heat, about 30 minutes from cold compared with about 20, so only go bigger if you need the extra water.
A little. Most storage geysers heat at 2 kW whatever their size, but a bigger tank heats more water and loses slightly more heat while it stands. Manuals list a 25L model losing about 0.1 units a day more than a 15L one.
It can, but it usually works poorly when the two are far apart, because the hot water cools in the long pipe. Most homes do better with a small 1L to 3L instant geyser in the kitchen and a storage geyser in the bathroom.
A 15L storage geyser takes about 20 minutes to heat cold water, and a 25L about 30 minutes. Havells suggests switching on at least an hour before first use. You can also leave it on, because the thermostat cuts the power once the water is hot.
Choose by the number of people first, then pick a shape that fits. If the wall is short or the ceiling is low, a horizontal or slim storage model gives you the same hot water with less height. For one person, a 3L instant geyser also saves space.
Often, yes. High water pressure or a pump supply may need extra pressure or vacuum protection valves, and the inlet should never be connected directly to a water lifting pump. Brands differ on which valve to use, so have a technician check before installation.

Still Unsure? Let's Make It Simple

The right geyser size comes down to three things: how many people bathe, how they bathe, and when. Get those right and you'll have hot water when you need it, without paying to heat water you don't.

Size is only half the story, though. A safe installation protects your family and your warranty. Our technicians can check your wall, wiring and water supply before the geyser goes up.
