Understanding Your AC Bill

Your monthly AC bill comes down to one relationship: Energy (kWh) = Power (Watts) × Hours Run ÷ 1000, multiplied by your state's per-unit tariff. Everything else in this calculator — tonnage, star rating, room size, insulation, humidity, and appliance load — changes how many watts your compressor actually draws and for how long, since inverter ACs throttle down once your room reaches the set temperature while non-inverter units cycle fully on and off. Use the calculator above to see this reflected in your own bill.

Choosing the Right Tonnage

As a rule of thumb: 0.8 Ton suits rooms up to 100 sq ft, 1.0 Ton suits 100–130 sq ft, 1.5 Ton suits 130–180 sq ft, and 2.0 Ton suits 180 sq ft and above. Add roughly 0.5 Ton of headroom if the room sits on a top floor under direct roof heat, has large west-facing windows, or regularly holds more than 3–4 people. An undersized AC runs at 100% load nonstop and can cost more to run than a correctly sized inverter unit — while an oversized AC short-cycles, leaving the room cold but humid and wasting the power drawn at every startup. Our AC sizing check flags this automatically once you enter your room details.

Tips for Energy Efficiency

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) estimates that every 1°C you raise your set temperature saves roughly 6% on cooling costs, which is why the Government of India recommends 24°C as the default. Pairing your AC with a ceiling fan on low speed can make 24–26°C feel like 21–22°C while cutting significant cost compared to running at 18°C. See exactly how much each degree costs you in the temperature comparison chart above.

Clogged filters and dirty coils can force your compressor to draw 15–20% more power for the same cooling, so regular servicing pays for itself. High humidity — common in coastal and monsoon-affected cities — can account for 30–40% of your total AC bill on its own, since the compressor must condense moisture out of the air before the room temperature drops; running Dry Mode on humid days can help without maxing out compressor load.

Star rating vs. typical monthly running cost (1.5 Ton, 8 hrs/day):

BEE Star Rating Approx. ISEER Relative Monthly Cost
1 Star ~3.4 Highest
3 Star ~4.1 Moderate
5 Star ~5.4 Lowest
